Google Home Max review: An assistant for music lovers

I’ve been told by Google that much like the original Google Home, the Max also uses just two mics at a time for voice control, but all six for what the company calls smart sound . And apparently, there’s a lot of mic switching going on, based on the orientation of the speaker. My soundbar happens to be Cast enabled, so I set the Home Mini to default music playback to the soundbar whenever I requested it.

You can also set downtime hours when the Home won't respond to your commands. You can create groups of devices, casting to multiple speakers at once, which is a neat trick for house parties. However, casting isn’t as flexible as using a Sonos system, particularly if you’re using Spotify. With Spotify and Cast, you can only play one track; with Sonos, you can play different tracks on different speakers using the single account. Google Home Routineslet you control multiple devices at once using a single wake-up word, say turning the lights down and the heating up for movie mode. And, a recent app update now gives you direct control over many smart devices without having to use your voice.

WTF: Location spying in Android

There was a time when it looked like Android Wear would be the most ubiquitous platform for smartwatches, offering universal support and a robust app platform. But after a series of delays to Android Wear 2.0 last year, Google finally released the new software update in February alongside two watches co-designed with LG. The watches were universally panned, the OS update took months to reach first-generation devices, and most manufacturers passed on releasing new 2.0 models.

It’ll give you a snapshot of your day in the morning and tells you what your commute looks like, whether it’ll rain, and so on, most of the things I check first thing in the morning on a phone. It’ll also give you the latest pre-recorded headlines from your choice of BBC, Sky and others. Home will also do the usual array of alarms and timers, which is particularly handy when cooking. The top of Home is touch sensitive and has two holes for the microphones. Tapping on the top pauses the music or cancels the current action while sliding your finger in a circular pattern adjusts the volume. It’s responsive and works well, but you can do either action via voice too.

The bass thumped on The Weeknd's "Starboy," but it overwhelmed the vocals, and Norah Jones' voice on "Tragedy" also got lost in the bass. The Echo did a much better job of handling the vocals on both tracks. Shop your favorite products and we’ll find the best deal with a single click. Or if you already have a Google Home and want to extend its capabilities to other rooms in your home, the Home Mini will fill that need, as well. With Siri, Assistant, Alexa, and Cortana all carving out niches among their uses bases, we seem to forever be segmented to the devices they live on. But Google took a step toward breaking down those barriers in 2017.

Amazon Echo (1st Gen,

It worked best when I started the cast from my phone and then used Assistant to change the song. Google Home is powered by Google Assistant (the company's Siri and Alexa competitor), and if you use Google's tools , Assistant opens up a lot of possibilities. Google Assistant can tap into your email, calendar, search history and more — in essence becoming an intelligent extension of your online existence.

While there are clear benefits to AI-powered phones and speakers, there are some serious detriments as well. That issue reared its ugly head with preview units of Google Home Mini. But it’s still a reminder of the fine line between creepy and convenient. Google Assistant only just turned one, but it’s already smarter than most adults.

Here's everything that works with Google Home and Home Mini

Or perhaps the den, next to that turntable that you’ve been meaning to hook up again. Embedded in the fabric are four multi-colored LED lights that let you know when the Home Mini is listening, processing, or muted. They are not nearly as bright or easy to see from across the room as the Echo Dot’s spinning ring of lights.

The touch controls are very sensitive, and a slight brush against it will change the volume or pause music. It makes it difficult to pick up the Home Mini without adjusting something. The Echo Dot’s push button volume up and down controls are easier to use and less likely to be accidentally triggered, for what it’s worth.

Speakers

Google has added what it called smart sound to the speaker, and is using the device’s integrated microphones to monitor the acoustics of the room in real-time while it plays music. This is meant to help it automatically adjusts to each room’s acoustic qualities. I’ve been told by Google that this process happens in just two or three seconds, and there is no way to turn smart sound off — which means that you can’t really demo smart sound as a party trick.

At launch, it only integrated with Nest, Philips, and Samsung home devices . As of this writing, it has added August, Belkin Wemo, Frigidaire, Honeywell, Insignia, Lifx, Logitech Harmony, Rachio, TP-Link, and Wink to its support list. Alexa still has even greater smart home support including Blink, Carrier, DigitalStrom, Haiku, Leviton, Lowe's Iris, Lutron, Netatmo, and many other kinds of devices.
